Report:
Seven of us started out at Gooseberry Falls on Thursday August 2, around 1:00 PM to hike to the Split Rock River campsites. The trail started with a gentle climb through a partly wooded path. After about 3 miles we came to the campsite. The creek that fed the campsite was dry. We continued on until we reached a nice overlook of the lake and then continued to the Split Rock River. Then we went to the group site at the Pplit Rock River. The site was beautiful and the river was flowing strong. This took us about5 hours total. The next day we were going to go to the group site before Beaver Bay. However, we decided to take a detour and see the Split Rock Lighthouse. It should be noted that some extra signage would be useful here as multiple state park trails cross the the trail and we took one and ended up backtracking. We had a nice foot dip in the waters of Lake Superior and went to the lighthouse and filled up our water. We then went to the Christmas Tree Ridge campsite which was quite nice although the only water was a very gross beaver pond. The next day we decided to hike to the Beaver River campsites because we heard they were much nicer than the two before that. This section of trail was challenging. The people were right that the two campsites after Christmas Tree Ridge were rather ugly and in a swamp. They also had only gross beaver water which quickly clogged my filter. However we made it to the Beaver River campsites which were really nice. They were a little close to the train tracks. Overall this section was very nice; although it was so dry all of the creeks were dry leaving little more than gross beaver ponds for water.
