I hiked this section as a day hike with 3 novice hikers. The first section from Jackson Lake Road was in good condition. Not too many mosquitoes. Not very scenic either as the trail went mostly through the woods. Saw a wolf and plenty of moose droppings/bear scat. The section from Andy Lake Road to the Border Route Trail was open due to previous logging, flat and quite SOGGY because of the amount of rain this spring. Plenty of mosquitoes here who enjoyed the fresh blood. The trail has been weed whipped in some areas but needs more work. The grass is about 2 feet high. The trail is marked quite well but because of the grass can be difficult to follow. The campsite at Andy Lake is covered by tall grass including the latrine. I was disappointed to see that the trail distance sign at the start of the trail did not include a notation that Two Harbors was 220+ miles. Would be a nice addition.



My friends and I shuttled cars for transportation. Traveling up Jackson Lake Road on the left side about 1/2 mile from the Jackson Lake Parking Lot, was a bronze plaque about 10 feet from the road. This was a remembrance placed by family members of three individuals killed in a plane crash. There was a wierd feeling in reading that plaque. On our return trip to Hwy 61, we were stopped by a husband/wife who left their car lights on when taking a day hike and thus had a dead battery. We didn't have jumper cables with us. They were planning, of course, to hike to town which would have been over 15 miles. Needless to say they were quite glad that we showed up. They reported seeing a bear cross the road.
