A friend and I hiked the first section of trail on a glorious spring day. We found the trail to have a few wet places in the first mile and also in the last several hundred feet before the Castle Danger parking lot -- otherwise the trail was in great shape. There were hepatica and other spring wildflowers just starting to bloom. We saw a grouse and fresh moose prints.
Both my friend and I have hiked the whole trail so we wanted to rate this section of trail compared to the other sections. The first mile is relatively flat and then it really climbs and descends with great pine ridges and overlooks of both Lake Superior and the backcountry forest. By the end of the hike we had rated it the third most challenging section of the SHT. With all the overlooks it also makes it one of my favorite sections.
