Finally got to the last sections of the trail that I haven't hiked. The falls along the Brule were high and many trilliums lined the trailside. The trail was generally dry, but Tom Lake Road was flooded in several places. In particular, it was flooded where the trail turns left up the hillside. Fortunately I bushwhacked to the left of the flooded area and came out on the trail. The trail would have been easy to miss if I'd gone to the right. I camped at South Carlson Pond, which is a beautiful site. I was glad I chose it rather than North Carlson Pond since the latter looked quite wet and muddy when I walked by the next day. The site also looks a little overdeveloped; it even has a wooden table! The beaver pond at North Carlson is truly an amazing engineering feat. The climb to "Hellacious" overlook is actually fairly gentle and the views along the ridge make the section from the Arrowhead Trail to Jackson Lake Road one of my favorites. Unfortunately, the last section north was rather disappointing due to extensive scarring of the land by earlier lumbering. Also, the last few miles were quite wet, muddy and poorly marked. I completed my trip by following the Border Route trail west back to Otter Lake. The lookout about a mile north of the SHTA is spectacular. I did see a couple moose, in the distance, grazing in the Pigeon River.



I bicycled from Otter Lake to Magney State Park to get back to my car. It's about 17 miles. Half is on dirt road, but the road is in good shape and the ride was easy.
