I took advantage of a little break in my schedule to do the very nice stretch of trail between Beaver Bay and Castle Danger. The weather was stupendous and the scenery was as magnificent as ever. There were a lot more trail users than I'm used to, but that's what you get with the Labor Day weekend crowds. I really made a point of doing every spur trail, every overlook this time around, because I always skip those and regret it later.
Predictably, Gooseberry Falls S. P. was packed to the gills when I stopped there for a cold soda but most park users didn't seem to venture too far beyond the parking lot so I was past them pretty quick. Finding an open campsite on either side of Gooseberry was really a problem. I shared a campsite on the far western part of the Gooseberry River with a guy I rode the shuttle with on Friday morning. He must've been really cranking down the trail because he covered about 15 more miles than me in 2 days and I went close to 22 miles! Tha's some freaky hiking or else that dude doesn't sleep much!
The bugs were almost all gone and the trail was in great hiking shape. Fortunately, I had plenty of water sources along the way so the dry conditions weren't a problem. I had my pack weight down around 20 lbs, so I hiked way more comfortably than ever before. Now I just need to get back to the trail once more yet this year to do the new section above Magney. |
