Linking people with nature by footpath along Lake Superior's North Shore.
A beautiful, warm, clear weekend! Started Friday afternoon and walked up to Horseshoe Ridge for the night. The overlook just east of the camp was very pretty, with lots of wild roses and strawberries that I think will be ripe in a week or two. Coming back to my tent about 10 PM after some stargazing, I believe I startled a bear. I never saw anything, but heard loud huffing and then what sounded like something crashing down the creek bed. Does anything else make a noise like that? I heard the same thing just off the trail near Leskinen Creek and found a register report of a bear cub in one of the camps recently. It seems to me bear encounters are more frequent; I'd suggest making some noise while hiking so you don't surprise one. The walk along the Manitou River is beautiful and the short walk to Manitou Cascades is well worth the trip. Sonju and Egge Lakes are also both very nice. However, this seems to be a popular area, so be prepared to share the campsites. I stayed a North Egge with 4 guys who were hiking the other direction and we had a pleasant evening chatting around the fire ring. The loons called late into the night and the wolves were howling, too. I got up early to try to see a moose, since there were a lot of tracks in the area, but no luck. Walked up the overlook just north of Section 13 Cliffs. Great views! The loop trail after the first overlook appears to be almost unused, but the view from the red pine ridge is excellent, too. The walk up from the creek at the base of the Section 13 Cliffs to the Section 13 campsite is pretty steep. I would certainly want to minimize my trips back and forth for water if I stayed at the campsite in the future. One final note. Since I hike alone, I usually bike from one end of my hike to the other. The bike from County Road 6 to Caribou River is great! It's only about 7 miles (versus about 26 miles of hiking) and about 2 - 3 of them are downhill! |
