Unusually warm temps with plenty of sun was the weather conditions this weekend, lotsa mosquitos and flies too. Starting at the parking lot on Arrowhead Trail/Hwy 16 at Hovland enroute to the first campsite heading East, just beyond Carlson Creek and onto the ridgeline is an abundance of Reindeer Lichen. The initial views of the lake are obscured by the growth this time of the year, but it wasn't long until we arrived at what we thought was hellacious overlook, the open views of Lake Superior the rock ledge bench and the Forest below we're awesome. This overlook is not noted in the SHT guidebook and we thought maybe we had passed the campsite, so we scouted ahead and soon found the camp. There is a Latrine, fire ring and we we're able to pitch 2 tents. Bring your bug repellent. Saturday after setting up camp we hiked to Hellacious (we think it's extraordinary) overlook, it's breathtaking. The view offers a vast sweeping birch forest below and Isle Royale is magnificant to the East. The Wildflowers we observed, Wild Rose, Sasparilla, Star Flower, Columbine, etc., we're in abundance. Our nite at camp was great, we saw no other hikers until the following morning on our way out, we met Marvin from St. Cloud, MN. He was finishing his final segment of the SHT that began 3 years ago, way to go Marv. We did videotape the whole experience for our Duluth & Superior Public Access program "The Wild Guides". Back at our car on Sunday afternoon we unloaded our heavy packs and realized again how fortunate we are to live on the Greatest Lake & The Greatest Trail along that Lake.
