Part I of a trip planned for Fall 2002 - I thought this might be of interest to others planning a trip. I'll follow with a report when done.
After not backpacking for 20 years, my son and I hiked the Indian Peaks Wilderness in Colorado. Starting elevation was 8,000' - climbing to 12,500' We did this in early Sep of 2002.
We hiked various trails and spent about 5 nights under tents. I learned very quickly that I was not in the condition for the uphill trails as I thought and that our packs were very heavy - 44 lbs.
So we decided decided to do better (at least I did) and to do another trail. He lives in Saint Paul and I live in Colorado. This time we are doing his territory and we are Ultra light converts.
We've been concentrating on reading/learning all we can about ultra light hiking - found a very good book "The Ultralight Backpacker" by Ryel Kestenbaum. We will be testing some of the equipment over the summer in Colorado at 8,000 to 10,000 feet elevations and doing a couple 14,000 peak climbs - including Pikes Peak to get in shape.
Equipment concerns are - will a single wall tent be breatheable enough, an ultralight Thermarest ground insulating enough and poly long underwear and t-shirts with fleece shirt and pants and Marmot Precip waterproof jackets warm enough for the weather the trail will offer in Fall. Will the fleece clothing with a hat, shoes and gloves be warm enough at night with a 32 degree rated down blanket (18 oz).
We'll see. |
