Linking people with nature by footpath along Lake Superior's North Shore.
Folks, Just wanted to let you know of our great hike from George Crosby Manitou park to the Horseshoe Ridge campsite on the SHT and back and inform you on the water & trail conditions in this area. My wife and I left GCM on Monday, 6/17, spent that night at Horseshoe Ridge and returned to GCM on 6/18. We'd intended to hike from Horseshoe Ridge to the Caribou River and then return to GCM, but the prospect of another site with tent worm infestation at Caribou was daunting. So, we hiked from Horseshoe Ridge back to GCM and stayed there two more nights. There were virtually no tent worms at our site (#8) at GCM, which is right by the (loud) river rapids. I highly recommend it. Oh, and you can more easily get to the SHT bridge across the Manitou River by taking the River trail from site 8, instead of going up to the Misquah trail and down to the bridge. On the SHT, the tent worms were at infestation stage, particularly up on Horseshoe Ridge. They are active from about 2 hours after sunrise to about an hour before sunset (must be when the sun hits them, they wake up) We pitched our tent on Horseshoe Ridge at about 1:30 pm, amidst tens of tent worms parachuting down on us on their silk strands....... yuck. Apparently not even the birds will eat them. The spur trail out to the overlook ridge just south of Horseshoe Ridge was especially thick with them. Napping in the tent, we could hear the worms parachuting onto the tent..... they seemed to ocassionally explode and leave a blood-like residue, which easily came off eith a wet wipe the next morning as we packed up. We were able to pack up camp in the am w/o difficulty, as the worms were still asleep/ dormant. BTW, there is ample water for filtering in the creek immediately east of the Horseshoe Ridge campsite. The ridge just above the site is a great place to watch the sunset. A great hike, even though we didn't do what we'd originally planned, but that's what packing is all about... going with the flow. Warmest regards, "Curious George" Copsey |
