My wife and I decided to take our annual spring backpack trip north this year by hiking from Tettegouche State Park to the Split Rock River wayside.
We departed the Tettegouche trailhead at noon on the 31st and experienced the unseasonably warm weather. To put it bluntly - it sucked. The black flies and mosquitos were out in force. Made it to Bear lake about 3:00 p.m and spent the night. Nice balmy evening (80 degrees) and plenty of bugs. Decided to get an early start the next day and left at 7:30 to avoid hiking in the heat. Heading for Faultline Creek campsite. Another hot, buggy day! Water became an issue as the rangers at Tettegouche told us not to drink the water out of the Beaver River. Arrive at Faultline Creek at 2:45 and set up camp by the beaver pond. Lots of wildlife around - grouse pileated woodpeckers and warblers. No rain again. Had to retire to the tent early because of the bugs. Got another early start on Sunday, and headed for Split Rock River. The weather had finally cooled off and again no rain. Made excellent time walking in the cool morning. Made it to the river by 10:30 and decide to walk up to the LightHouse at the park and see the sites. 42 degrees - what a change in the weather. It was much nicer to move around in and NO BUGS!!. All in all, a very nice trip. Experienced a litle heat cramps on the second day, but no injuries. The trail was in good shape.
