What a nice day! The temp was about 40 degrees and it was a sunny day with just a bit of breeze. My friend Randy and I started a hike at the Britton Peak parking lot about 11:30 am. We reached Carlton Peak just in time for a nice lunch break. We read the register and noted that people have been passing through all winter long. This is another of those winters that have little snow to speak of. The trail was covered in snow which was worn down with all the foot traffic. There was only 3-4 inches of snow on the ground. We enjoyed lunch at Carlton Peak and moved on toward the Temperance River. There was some melting and refreezing going on, creating some icy situations but nothing that could not be dealt with. We reached the Temperance and realized that it had open spots quite often, which meant we would have to cross it at the snowmobile bridge, which we did. After moving away from the Temperance, the path had less use, which meant more snow to plow through. We enjoyed the view from the top of the bluff on the way to the Cross River. We met the ladies from the SHTA office on their way to the Cross River bridge. They wanted to find out if the bridge was in danger of ice jams, as Ken Oelkers had reported. It had ice right up to its support beams. After the inspection, we headed down the spur trail to Schroeder to our vehicles. Then I transported Randy back to his vehicle at Britton Peak. A great day to hike in February ! Beautiful views and two nice rivers. 8 miles total. Nice day. |
