Duluth to Two Harbors Construction

SHTA Needs Volunteers for Two Harbors to Duluth Construction!

We’re continuing trail construction this year on the last major section of the Superior Hiking Trail between Two Harbors and Duluth. We’re close to finishing a 20-mile section of trail between Co Rd 301 and Rossini Road. Han Taylor will take the lead in finishing up this section.

Then it’s on to the next section to be constructed, a 5.5-mile stretch from Rossini Road to Fox Farm Road. Larry Sampson will take the lead on this section.

SHTA will again be hosting camping weekends for some of the trail building days. Other days will be single work days with no camping provided. All work days begin at 9:00 and generally go to 3:00 or 4:00.

Don’t feel you have to be highly skilled to volunteer. Training will be provided. Wear long-sleeves, long pants, and sturdy boots. Bring beverages, your lunch, mosquito repellant and gloves if you have them. Tools will be provided.

You need to sign up in advance for each work weekend so we’ll know how many to plan for. Please call the SHTA office at 218-834-2700 or email us at volunteer@shta.org to sign up by the Thursday before the weekend. Thanks!

You can camp Friday night, Saturday night, or both nights. Breakfasts and Saturday supper will be provided. When you email or call, we’ll ask you what you are signing up for.

Here are the work dates for the two different construction sections:

Finishing Co Rd 301 to Rossini Road Construction, 2 miles – Han Taylor

May 15th and/or 16th: Free camping will be provided at the home of a SHTA member (directions will be given when you sign up). Volunteers will be provided breakfasts and Saturday evening supper. Meet at the Reeves Road trailhead parking lot each day. Directions: At Hwy 61 milepost 26.0 in Two Harbors, turn north on Hwy 2 (Lake Co Rd 2) and go 5.5 miles to Reeves Road. Turn left and take immediate left to trailhead parking lot.

May 30th: Work is 9-4 with no camping provided. Meet at the Reeves Road trailhead parking lot. See above directions.

Rossini Road to Fox Farm Road Construction, 5.5 miles, Larry Sampson

Larry plans to work the following Thursdays and Fridays on the trail. No camping will be provided for these dates.

Thursday, May 14 and Friday, May 15;

Thursday, May 21 and Friday, May 22;

Thursday, June 11 and Friday, June 12;

Thursday, June 18 and Friday, June 19;

Thursday, June 25 and Friday, June 26

Larry is looking for a convenient place to meet to carpool to the work site on each of these days. When you sign up you’ll be given the meeting place, which will be somewhere off Hwy 61 between Duluth and Two Harbors.

Here are Larry’s weekend campout dates:

June 27 and/or 28th: Camping at Korkki Nordic Ski Area. Meet at Korkki at 9:00 both days.

July 25th and/or 26th: Camping at Korkki Nordic Ski Area. Meet at Korkki at 9:00 both days.

August 15th and/or 16th: Camping at Korkki Nordic Ski Area. Meet at Korkki at 9:00 both days.

September 12 and/or 13th: Camping at Korkki Nordic Ski Area. Meet at Korkki at 9:00 both days.

Directions to Korkki Nordic Ski Area: From Hwy 61 milepost 14.9, turn left on Homestead Road and go 2.4 miles. Turn left on Korkki Road and go 0.5 miles to Korkki Nordic on right.
