![]() | August 29, 2008: Reports are that the two inches of rain all soaked into the dry ground and barely put any water into the creeks so the low water advisory for small creeks and streams is still in place. |
![]() | August 28, 2008: Most of the trail received over two inches of rain on August 27th (Yea!). But we haven't had any reports yet of whether this has refilled the dry creeks. So be advised that the small creeks or streams that are water sources for the campsites may be dry. There is plenty of water along the trail in the ponds, rivers, larger creeks, and lakes but you should plan ahead if the water source for your campsite for the night is listed as a small creek or stream. \"The Guide to the Superior Hiking Trail\" lists the water source for each campsite. |
![]() | August 27, 2008: There are currently no campfirefire bans on the Superior Hiking Trail. However, conditions are extremely dry so use extreme caution. Consider not having a campfire at night or if you do, make a very small fire and make sure the fire is completely out before you go to bed at night or leave the campsite during the day. |
![]() | August 15, 2008: Here are the 2008 hunting seasons. There is very little hunting along the trail but you should be aware that these hunting seasons are in progress. Rabbit, squirrel: Sep 13-Feb 28; grouse: Sep 13-Jan 4; bear: Sep 1 - Oct 14; moose: Oct 4 - Oct 19; deer, archery: Sep 13 - Dec 31; deer, firearems Nov 8 - Nov 23. Parts of the Superior Hiking Trail are closed during the firearems deer season Nov 8 - 23. See the separate entry for information on trail closures during the firearms deer season. |
![]() | August 15, 2008: The following parts of the Superior Hiking Trail will be closed during the firearms deer season. This is because there are many private lands the trail crosses who make this a condition of allowing the trail on their property. There is also a firearms deer season in some state parks. All trailheads affected will be marked closure signs. ***** The trail will be closed from: 1) the start of the trail at Co Rd 301 just north of Two Harbors to Sugarloaf Road (milepost 73); 2) from the Lakewalk (milepost 123) though Judge Magney State Park to the Camp 20 Road; 3) the newest section of trail west of Two Harbors from Rossini Rd to the Lake County Demo Forest; 4) In the Duluth section of trail from Jay Cooke State Park to Mission Creek. ***** There is a firearms deer season in Gooseberry, Split Rock, and Tettegouche state parks. The parks are open on the lake side of Hwy 61 but closed on the inland side. In addition, all of Judge Magney State Park will be open to hunting so the section from Judge Magney state park to Camp 20 Road will be closed. **** The rest of the trail is open to hiking but SHTA discourages people from hiking on the trail during this two-week period. If you do hike on the trail, you must wear blaze orange as a safety precaution. |
![]() | August 12, 2008: The Superior Trail races will be held on the SHT on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5th and 6th. ***1) The 100 Mile will start at Gooseberry Falls State Park at 8:00 a.m. on Friday Sept 5th and will end by 10:00 p.m. on Saturday the 6th at Caribou Highlands Lodge at Lutsen Mountains Recreation Area. ***2) The 50 Mile will start at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday Sept 6th at the Finland Rec Center and will finish at Caribou Highlands. ***3) The 26-mile Marathon will start at the Cook Co Rd 1 (Cramer Road) trailhead at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday Sept 6th and finish at Caribou Highlands Lodge. Expect to see runners on the trail during this time period. The trail is still open to regular hiking throughout this area. |
![]() | June 15, 2008: The Cascade Creek Bridge is out and washed downstream. It will likely be several weeks before this bridge is replaced. Cascade Creek is located in Cacade River State Park west of the Cascade River. Cascade Creek is between Lookout Mountain and the west side of the Cascade River Loop. The good news is that there is a 0.9 mile detour on state park ski/hiking trails to the north where you can go around the bridge area and back to the SHT main trail. The detour is posted. The creek was still high but I was able to cross the creek on some large boulders right by the bridge site. But if you feel at all uncertain about crossing the creek on boulders take the detour. |
![]() | April 1, 2007: the new Fifth Edition of the Guide to the Superior Hiking Trail is in! It includes maps, campsite information, water sources, and a mile-by-mile description of the trail from the start of the trail at Lake Co Rd 301 (Fors Rd) in Two Harbors to Otter Lake Rd near the Canadian border. A through-hike of this segment is 205 miles. The Guide also includes the 39 miles of new trail through Duluth built in 2004-2006. The Guide price is $15.95. |
