![]() | January 12, 2010: A few inches of powder snow has fallen on top of the icy crust so this should make for good snowshoe conditions. Likely it will be icey in spots so use caution. We're also in a warming trend as well so it's a good time to get out! |
![]() | December 29, 2009: in general the trail got about 10 inches of new snow (Duluth got 24 inches!) followed by pouring rain or drizzle followed by cold temperatures that turned the snow anywhere from icy to a frozen glop. The streets and side walks are like skating rinks in Two Harbors. There are snow boulders on the sidewalk in front of my house where the plow pushed up snow that I can't even start to chip away at until it warms up. I suspect the whole trail will be icy. We are also wondering if there is more tree damage as I got a report from someone who lives in the woods southwest of Two Harbors and a bunch of tops off balsam trees had snapped off. I wish I had a better report. I haven't gotten any actual trail reports yet but will post them when I do. |
![]() | December 15, 2009: Here is a list of the trailhead parking lots that are plowed in winter. ***From Rossini Road through the end of the trail at Otter Lake Road: Lake County Demonstration Forest; Castle Danger; Gooseberry Falls State Park; Split Rock River Wayside; Beaver Bay; Silver Bay; Tettegouche State Park; Finland Recreation Center; Crosby-Manitou State Park; Caribou River Wayside; Temperance River Wayside; Britton Peak; Oberg Mountain; Lutsen Mountains Recreation Area; Caribou Trail; Cascade River State Park; Bally Creek Road (second parking lot only); Pincushion Mountain at Grand Marais; Kadunce River Wayside; Judge Magney State Park (the big parking lot isn’t plowed but there is room to park cars right by the contact station).*** Duluth Section: Jay Cooke State Park Headquarters; Munger Trail at 123rd Ave West; Magney-Snively Park; Spirit Mountain; Rose Garden; Hartley Nature Center; Martin Road. |
![]() | December 15, 2009: Still not enough snow to snowshoe on most parts of the trail. A good place to check snow depths is: www.dnr.state.mn.us/snow_depth/index.html *** A good place to rent snowshoes is at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. |
![]() | December 4, 2009: There are still 20 miles of trail that has not been cleared from the Sept. 28th windstorm on the northern end of the trail from Co. Rd. 70 to Andy Lake Road. Reports are up to 100 trees down per five mile section. There are no parking lots plowed in winter in this area and Jackson Lake Road and Otter Lake Road are only plowed if there is winter logging in progress so access in these areas is quite limited anyway. But the rest of the trail is cleared and ready for winter use! |
![]() | December 4, 2009: Winter is finally here with reports of 1 - 4 inches of snow on the trail. |
![]() | November 23, 2009: HUNTING SEASONS. Following are the dates of hunting seasons still in progress. There is not much hunting done on the Superior Hiking Trail but you do need to know hunting is occurring and it is legal to hunt on public land outside of state parks. Rabbits and squirrels, Sept 19- Feb 28; Grouse Sept 19 - Jan 3; Racoon and red fox Oct 24 to Mar 15; Deer, archery Sept 19 - Dec 31. |
![]() | September 16, 2009: The bridge at the Kadunce River has been removed due to a rotted log timber supporting the bridge. This bridge is on the section from Cook Co Rd 58 (Lindskog Rd) to the Kadunce River Wayside north of Grand Marais. The bridge closure is 0.7 miles from the end of the section. It is possible to cross the river on rocks at this point. But this might not be possible after a rain event. The bridge is scheduled to be replaced in June 2010. |
![]() | April, 2009: The Fifth Edition of the "Guide to the Superior Hiking Trail, published by us -- the Superior Hiking Trail Association -- continues to be your best source of detailed information about the Superior Hiking Trail.
